WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Playing without three starters, the Washington & Jefferson women's tennis team was unable to pull out a victory in a 5-4 loss to visiting Geneva Wednesday evening at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center.
The loss drops W&J to 0-2 overall and in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Geneva moves to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
W&J earned victories in two of the three doubles spots. However, the Golden Tornadoes won four of the six singles matches, which included three victories in third-set tiebreakers.
Victoria Wilson (Butler, Pa./North Catholic) and
Emma Humphrey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) accounted for three of the Presidents four wins. In doubles play, Wilson and Humphrey earned a dominant 8-2 win at second doubles.
Wilson also cruised to a 6-2 and 6-1 victory at the third singles spot. Humphrey claimed a straight set victory at fourth singles, winning by 6-2 and 6-3 scores.
The Presidents only other win came at third doubles. The tandem of first-year players,
Isabella Naddeo (Canonsburg, Pa.Trinity and
Eden Ma (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair), won by a narrow 8-7 (9-7) margin.
