WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington and Jefferson College men's tennis team opened its fall season with a pair of home matches Saturday at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center. The Presidents fell by a 9-0 score to Baldwin Wallace before dropping a 7-2 decision to Franciscan. Both were non-conference matches.
Joey Ioli (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper Saint Clair) picked up W&J's lone singles win of the day. Ioli defeated Spencer Grynwajc of Franciscan in a third-set tiebreaker at sixth singles. Ioli edged Grynwajc by a 7-6 (8-6) score in the initial set before dropping a tight second set 7-5. Ioli prevailed with a 10-4 victory in the tiebreaker.
Abhinav Yarramaneni (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos) and
Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) earned an 8-4 victory over the third doubles tandem from Franciscan.
W&J continues its fall season on Friday, Sept. 23 when it hosts Division II West Liberty.
