Kenyon rallies to edge W&J field hockey, 3-2

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team held a halftime lead but fell by a 3-2 score to visiting Kenyon College in a non-conference game Thursday evening at Cameron Stadium.

The Presidents opened the scoring with an early goal in the 5th minute. W&J capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity as Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) found the back of the net after an insert pass from Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont).

The visiting Owls (1-1) answered midway through the second quarter as Carolyn Herbosa sent one into the bottom left corner of the cage. The Herbosa scored evened the score at 1-1 in the 25th minute. W&J regained the lead just before the halftime horn. Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) scored after collecting a rebound from a shot by Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). The Giering score, which is her second of the season, came with just seconds left in the second quarter.

Neither team was able to score in the third quarter and the Presidents carried a one-goal advantage into the fourth. Kenyon turned the tide with a pair of goals in the final stanza. The two goals came within a three-minute span, which included the eventual game-winner, which was fired in from the top of the circle by Grace Lane after a penalty corner set up the scoring chance.

Kenyon held advantages in shots (21-8), shots on goal (15-7) and penalty corners (14-5).

Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) finished with double-digit saves for the third time this season, as the junior stopped 12 shots in 60 minutes of work.

W&J opens Empire 8 play when it hosts Elmira College on Saturday, Sept. 10. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
