HIRAM, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College swimming & diving teams returned to action this weekend with a away tri-meet Saturday afternoon at Hiram. The hosting Terriers claimed victory on both sides (Men's: 147-95; Women's: Hiram 130-101, Franciscan 139-83).
The Presidents swimming team also awarded
Aidan Miller (Grove City, Ohio / St. Charles Prep) and
Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif. / Millikan) as the Presidents of the meet.
The men's team started off their afternoon with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay (2:01.06). This lineup involved
Nathan Smith (Fort Defiance, Va. / Fort Defiance),
Matt Allgeier (Port Matilda, Pa. / State College Area), Miller, and
Alex Lee (Los Angeles, Calif. / Eagle Rock).
The W&J men were led by Smith, who finished this afternoon with two first place efforts. He placed first in the 100 Backstroke (1:04.39) and in the 200 Backstroke (2:29.20).
Miller posted an impressive day as well as he raced to two first place finishes as well. Miller placed first in the 100 freestyle (1:05.84) and in the 1500 freestyle (18:45.95).
Lee also wrapped up an impactful day in the lanes with two second place efforts. Lee finished second in both the 50 freestyle (26.48) and the 100 freestyle (59.43).
Junior captain
Matt Allgeier finished second in the 200 breaststroke (3:03.45) while
Esteban Sanchez-Sink (Lansing, Mich. / East Lansing) was second in the 200 freestyle (2:18.14).
Freshman
Melvin McRae (Lillington, N.C. / Overhills) took first place in the 1-meter diving event (133.12).
On the women's side, the Presidents were led by junior
Molly Nielsen (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), as she posted first place finishes in the 100 freestyle (1:06.42) and in the 200 freestyle (2:25.09).
Neumann made her first appearance for the Presidents this season after studying abroad in the fall semester. Neumann made an impact as she contributed first place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:26.03) and in the 200 breaststroke (3:05.97).
Morgan McGuire (Friedens, Pa. / Somerset) had an under-the-radar performance this afternoon placing second in the 200 backstroke (2:58.24).
Junior captain
Amanda Graves (Irwin, Pa. / Penn Trafford) had a decent day in the pool finishing third in both the 100 backstroke (1:21.06) and in the 100 butterfly (1:20.94).
Freshman diver
Madison Trunzo (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) took first place in the 1-meter diving event (171.22).
The Presidents women's team capped off the afternoon with a first place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (4:32.68). The lineup involved
Sydney Neumann,
Morgan McGuire,
Amanda Graves, and
Molly Nielsen.
W&J returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference competition on Saturday, Jan. 21 when they look to host Grove City. The dual-meet have a scheduled start time of 1 p.m.
