WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team overcame a slow start to pick up a 3-1 road win over host Waynesburg University Saturday morning in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match.
The win improves the Presidents to 3-1 in conference play and 10-10 overall. The 3-1 start is W&J's best in PAC play since 2018. Waynesburg falls to 1-3 in league contests and 8-11 overall.
Sophomore outside hitter
Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) put together a strong performance to guide the Presidents to the conference victory. Fetsko racked up 20 kills and a career-high 31 digs for the Presidents. This marks the third time in the past four matches that Fetsko has reached 20 kills.
Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) continued to be a force at the net. The freshman middle registered 15 kills and hit .650 during the match. Freshman outside hitter
Rian Benz (Strongsville, Ohio / Holy Name) reached double figures in both kills (10) and digs (10).
Senior middle
Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) racked up a match-best five total blocks. Freshman setter
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio / Benjamin Logan) had the match-high with 25 assists. Junior setter
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) added 20 assists and 12 digs.
The Presidents led the opening set by a 22-17 margin late. However, the host Yellow Jackets rallied back five-straight points to even the score. W&J had a pair of set points but were unable to seal things up and Waynesburg ripped off the final three points to secure a 27-25 decision to open the match.
The Red and Black once again built a lead in the second set. The Presidents led by seven points on four occasions. Waynesburg was able to chip away, however. A service ace by the Yellow Jackets eventually matched the Presidents at 22 all. W&J was able to finish off the second set with three of the final four points. The late spurt featured a kill apiece by Fetsko and Little.
W&J was able to earn a pair of 25-15 victories in the third and fourth sets to close the match. The Presidents recorded eight of the final nine points in the third set. W&J raced out to a sizable lead early in the fourth set and Waynesburg never really threatened.
The Presidents outpaced the Jackets in kills (56-42), blocks (7-2), assists (51-37) and digs (83-72).
W&J heads to Thiel for another league match on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
