Hoover’s second half goal keys Presidents in 1-0 win over Westminster

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) scored an unassisted goal in the 50th minute of play to account for the lone goal of the match as the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer beat Westminster by a 1-0 score in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Wednesday evening.

The victory improves the Presidents to 4-1-3 in PAC play and 9-2-4 overall. The win was the first for the Presidents over the Titans since 2018.

The loss dropped the Titans to 6-2 in conference play and 12-3 overall.

W&J fought through constant pressure throughout the first half but did not wilt. Westminster controlled play and put together a 16-5 advantage in shots in the opening half.

Senior goalkeeper Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) made seven saves during the first half.

The Presidents made some halftime adjustments and things evened up in the second half. W&J broke through for the game's only goal just 4:24 into the second half.

Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) pushed the ball up field and played it ahead just in front of the box. A failed clear attempt by the Titans was sent right to Hoover, who corralled the ball and drilled the ball with her left foot into the upper right corner of the net. The score was the fourth of the season for Hoover.

The W&J defense was able to withstand pressure and the Titans were unable to net the equalizer over the final 40-plus minutes. Hipkins was able to make four saves during that time to preserve the victory for the Presidents.

Hipkins recorded her PAC-leading eighth shutout of the season. The senior made 11 saves Wednesday evening as W&J extended its shutout streak to four-straight games.

Westminster out-shot W&J by a 25-11 margin in the match. The Titans held an 11-7 margin in shots on goal. Both teams attempted two corner kicks in the match.

W&J returns to action when it homes Bethany College for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 21. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
