W&J comes up short in PAC Tournament Quarterfinals

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- An unassisted goal in the 99th minute by Hailey Gilchrest propelled visiting Waynesburg University to a 1-0 double overtime victory over the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

W&J was eliminated from the PAC Tournament and left frustrated after holding a decisive 29-15 shot advantage in the match. The Presidents also posted a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams notched four corner kicks during the match Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets (9-6-2) were able to keep the Presidents off the scoreboard due to several missed opportunities for the Red and Black on the offensive end.

W&J mounted a 13-4 advantage in shots in the opening half. Senior Makenna Mann (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) paced the Presidents efforts with four shots all on goal during the first half.

Waynesburg tightened things up in the second half. Things were more even as the Presidents held a narrow 12-10 advantage in shots. The Yellow Jackets hit the cross bar in the 58th minute. Both teams had several chances down the stretch but neither could score during the second half and the game was forced into overtime.

There was only one shot attempt in the first OT period, but it would be the deciding shot in the match. Gilchrest, a freshman, scored an unassisted goal with 1:17 remaining in the first extra stanza and the Yellow Jackets were on top, 1-0. In the final 10 minutes, W&J tried to get the equalizer and managed three shots, all in the final five minutes, but all went wide and Waynesburg would advance to the next round with the 1-0 victory.

Mann led the Presidents with seven shots in the loss. Senior Kayla Daugherty (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) recorded five shots.

Senior goalkeeper Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) made three saves in 110 minutes in net.

W&J, in its first season under head coach Dan Dubois, finishes with an overall record of 10-4-4.
