MARIETTA, Ohio - The Washington & Jefferson College Men's Basketball team was dealt a road loss Friday evening in their matchup against host Marietta College.
The Red & Black kept it close until halfway through the first half when the Pioneers were able to pull away and put themselves ahead by a 50-24 at the half. Despite almost doubling their points in the second half, W&J was defeated by a 93-66 score.
W&J placed two players in double digits as sophomore Brandon Jakiela (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) paced the Presidents with 19 points to lead W&J for the second-straight game. The sophomore hit 8-of-14 from the floor. Joining Jakiela in double digits was sophomore Alex Acosta (Acworth, Ga. / North Cobb) with 13 points, hitting 6-of-7 from the floor, and a team-high three blocks as well.
Sophomore Matt Seidl (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) and freshman Nathan Plotner (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) added nine points apiece. Plotner posted a team-high six rebounds. Senior Nick Gearhart (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon) chipped in eight points.
The Presidents beat out the Pioneers in points in the paint but were unable to find their groove beyond the arc to offset the three-point differential. Marietta made 11 three-pointers compared to just three by W&J.
W&J will take on Kenyon College in Saturday action at the Marietta Shrine Tournament. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 11.
