W&J downed in straight sets as Chatham locks up PAC’s top seed

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat to visiting Chatham University in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

The Cougars secured the sweep by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-19 over the Presidents. The victory locked up the top seed for Chatham in the upcoming 2023 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.

W&J struggled defensively in the loss. The Cougars racked up 38 kills and committed just seven attack errors to compile a .369 hitting percentage. W&J out-hit Chatham in the third set but was unable to prevail and force a fourth set.

Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) posted a team-high nine kills and two service aces in the loss. Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) finished with eight kills. Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) recorded six kills while hitting .500 in limited opportunities in the middle.

Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Pa./Benjamin Logan) finished with a team-high 12 assists. Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) posted a match-high four total blocks. Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) produced nine digs.

Alyssa Leskovac posted a match-high 10 kills while adding 13 digs and three service aces to pace Chatham's efforts.

W&J closes the regular season at 6-4 in the PAC and 13-13 overall. Chatham finishes with a 9-1 league mark and a 17-5 overall record.

The Presidents will host a PAC Tournament quarterfinals match on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at Salvitti Family Gym. The fourth-seeded Presidents will host the fifth-seeded Westminster Titans, who earned its way into the field with a sweep over Saint Vincent Saturday. W&J edged Westminster in five sets back on October 6.
