ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team suffered a pair of defeats Sunday in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play in Illinois.
The Presidents fell by a 15-10 score to Austin in its first match of the day. Penn State Behrend then edged W&J by an 8-7 tally.
Austin 15, W&J 10
The 'Roos rode a strong first half effort to pick up the victory. Austin led 5-3 after the first quarter before extending their advantage to 9-4 at halftime.
The teams played through an even second half. Both teams scored three goals apiece in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
A trio of Presidents matched for the team high with two goals.
AJ Alderman,
Kailer Spicer and
Mitchell Rubio both found the back of the net twice for W&J.
Zishuo Ma managed seven saves in goal.
Penn State Behrend 8, W&J 7
The Lions outlasted the Presidents in the weekend finale. The teams were meeting for the third time this season. W&J and Penn State Behrend had split the previous two meetings.
PSB raced out to a 5-2 lead after a quarter of play. The Lions eventually stretched the lead to 8-3 midway through the third quarter. W&J made its best attempt at a comeback from that point.
Aidan Johnson sandwiched a pair of goals around a Rubio score as W&J trimmed the deficit to 8-6 heading to the final quarter. Rubio was able to cut the deficit to a to a single goal with 4:06 to play.
W&J had a few chances down the stretch to even the score but could not tally the equalizer.
Rubio led the Presidents with three goals and an assist.
Lazar Marsenic added a goal and two assists.
Ma registered 13 saves in the narrow setback.
