GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team opened the game with 15-consecutive points as they rolled to an 81-40 win at Thiel College in Presidents' Athletic Conference play Monday evening.
The win is the fourth-straight for the Presidents, who improve to 5-1 in conference play and 7-1 overall. Thiel remains winless as they drop to 0-9 overall and 0-7 in PAC contests.
A total of 15 Presidents found the scoring column in the runaway victory. Junior guard
Bryn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) and freshman center
Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa./Indiana Area) reached double figures with 10 points apiece to pace the Presidents' offensive efforts.
Sophomore guard
Hannah Archer (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye) finished with nine points. Sophomore guard
Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) filled the stat sheet with eight points, four rebounds and three steals in 14 minutes off the bench.
Senior center
Sarah Berardelli (Ambridge, Pa./North Catholic) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds with seven of those coming on the offensive glass. Berardelli added seven points, two assists and two steals.
Junior guard/forward
Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) tallied seven points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists in the win.
The Red and Black led 15-0 at the 3:22 mark of the first quarter. The Presidents led 22-8 after a quarter of play and swelled their lead to 41-19 at halftime. W&J put together its largest scoring output of the game with 29 points in the third quarter. The Presidents outpaced the Tomcats by a 40-21 margin over the final 20 minutes.
W&J shot 45.7 percent from the field as they converted 32-of-70 attempts. The Presidents turned in a nice showing at the charity stripe, as they made 12-of-14 attempts at the line.
The Presidents posted a 45-29 advantage in rebounding and forced Thiel to commit 20 turnovers.
W&J also held decided advantages in points off turnovers (30-4), second chance points (21-0), bench points (46-5), points in the paint (52-18) and fast break points (22-0).
Josie Lewis led the Tomcats with 14 points while playing all 40 minutes of action Monday. Thiel converted just 33.3 percent from the field including a 6-25 (24 percent) mark from behind the three-point line and made just four-of-11 free throws (36.4 percent).
The Presidents travel to Beaver Falls, Pa. to face the Geneva Golden Tornadoes on Saturday, Dec. 16. Start time of the PAC contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be the last conference contest before the New Year.
