WASHINGTON, PA. -- The Washington & Jefferson Presidents were defeated by #15 Oswego State 5-2 Saturday afternoon in non-conference play at Ross Memorial Park.
Oswego jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first and adding two more in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Oswego added one run in fourth inning followed by another run in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Presidents' bats heated up late in the game. Josh Dezenzo led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center field and advanced to second on Tyler Horvat's ground out to second. Dezenzo scored on Jacob LaDuca's double to right field.
The Presidents threatened in the bottom of the ninth, adding one more run. Scout Zaas led off the inning for the Presidents and reached on an error. Sam Schuster then walked, putting runners on first and second. Dan Beistel hit into a fielder's choice but reached on a throwing error that allowed Zaas to score, giving W&J its second and final run of the game.
Horvat received the loss for the Presidents, which is only the second of his career. Horvat pitched for 4.0 innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. W&J's bullpen combined for 5.0 innings pitched and gave up just one earned run.
Nolan Lutz collected two hits to pace the Presidents' offense.
The Presidents return to action on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. against ninth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University.
