WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-11 decision to visiting Mount Union in non-conference play Saturday afternoon under cold, wintry conditions at Alexandre Stadium.
The loss drops the Presidents to 3-3 overall. Mount Union improves to 2-3 overall in 2023.
Both teams came out firing during a high-scoring first quarter. The Purple Raiders scored two of the first three goals to take the early lead. W&J countered with back-to-back goals to take its first lead at 3-2 on a goal by
Carter Watts, which was aided by an assist from Aidan Herman at the 8:40 mark of the first.
After a Mount Union score, a pair of goals by
Sean McCaffrey () gave W&J a 5-3 advantage with 4:49 to play in the first. The Purple Raiders countered with a pair of goals late in the quarter to even the score at 5-5 after 15 minutes of action.
The Purple Raiders opened the second quarter with three of the first four goals. That spurt allowed the visitors to take an 8-6 lead over the Presidents.
Parker Lucas (Delmar, Del./Delmar) scored off a pass from Aidan Herman () late in the second quarter to bring W&J within a goal (8-7) at halftime.
Mount Union stretched its lead to 11-7 in the third quarter with three-straight goals to open the frame. Scores by Lucas and
Paul Shook (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) brought W&J within a pair (11-9) with 1:03 to play in the third. Mount Union scored late in the third to take a three-goal lead to the fourth. The Purple Raiders maintained a lead of at least three for the entirety of the final quarter.
Lucas paced W&J with a four-point effort (3 goals, 1 assist). Four other Presidents tallied three points, which included a three-goal effort by McCaffrey.
Levi Krebs () and
Ronin Keane () led W&J with five ground ball pickups apiece. Keane had a team-high three caused turnovers and won 11-of-28 face-off attempts.
Noah Bracco (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) made 14 saves over 60 minutes of action in goal.
Mount Union was led by a six-point effort from Logan Gebhart.
W&J hosts Anderson University on Wednesday, March 15. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
