CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team dropped a pair of games Tuesday morning at the PFX Spring Games in Florida. They were shut out in both games, falling to 24th ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh by an 8-0 margin before suffering a 5-0 loss to a strong Luther College team who entered the day receiving votes in the NFCA poll.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh 8, W&J 0
The Titans, who are ranked No. 24 in this week's NFCA Division III Top 25 poll, stayed perfect on the season as they methodically pushed themselves past the Presidents to improve to 13-0 on the season. W&J had its chances early on in the contest but were unable to take advantage. Oshkosh tallied a run in the top of the second when a pop fly fell into shallow left field to score a runner with two outs.
W&J seemed poised to score in the bottom of the third inning when they loaded the bases with no outs.
Julia DiPietro-Harvey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Aliya Schraeder (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) followed with a single and advanced to second when she successfully stole the bag.
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) was hit by a pitch on a 2-2 count to load the bases. However, Oshkosh worked out of the jam by retiring the next three W&J batters without the ball leaving the infield.
The missed opportunity by the W&J offense seemed to take the wind of its sails. Oshkosh added another run in the fourth before breaking things open with a three-spot in the top of the fifth to make it 5-0. The Titans added two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh as they coasted to their 13th straight victory to open the season.
Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) suffered the loss in the circle. The junior gave up five runs on nine hits. Petrowski, who is now 2-1 on the season, struck out three and walked three. Oshkosh hitters made W&J throw 173 pitches in the seven-inning affair.
Luther 5, W&J 0
The Norse, who are receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25 poll, improved to 14-2 on the season by downing the Presidents 5-0 in the second game of the day for the Red & Black. Luther pushed across two runs in the bottom of the second and another in the third inning. Luther added two more runs in the fourth inning to close the scoring.
W&J managed just three hits in the loss to Luther. The Presidents put a runner into scoring position in the second, third and sixth innings but could not push one across the plate.
Julia DiPietro-Harvey tallied one of four W&J hits in game two. The freshman was the lone President to record a hit in both games Tuesday.
On Deck: After having an off day Wednesday, W&J returns to action Thursday, March 23 when they face Wisconsin-Platteville (11:30 a.m.) and Oberlin (4:30 p.m.) in Winter Haven, Fla. at the Diamondplex Complex.
