DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team fell to the No. 9 ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays by a 10-0 score Thursday morning in non-conference play at the RussMatt Central Invitational in Davenport, Fla. at Northeast Regional Park.
The Blue Jays had the Presidents number from the start as they relied on strong pitching and impressive offense to carry them past the Presidents. The Blue Jays put runs on the board over the first two innings as they coasted to the victory.
One of the only two hits for the Presidents came in the bottom of the first inning as Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) singled on a hot shot into left field.
The Blue Jays would tack on five more runs between the fourth and sixth innings. The Presidents second and final hit came from senior standout Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) in the bottom of the sixth as he smacked in a line drive to straight center, but was unable to spark the Presidents offense.
Six Presidents saw time on the mound over the seven innings in a bullpen game. Alex Tomsic (Atlanta, Ga. / Mount Vernon Presbyterian) got the start and suffered the loss. Sam Stewart (Raleigh, N.C. / Pro 5 Academy) appeared in his first game of the season and recorded a scoreless inning of relief.
W&J will face Wooster College in a doubleheader on Friday, March 24 to wrap up the annual Spring Break trip. The doubleheader is scheduled for a first pitch of 10:15 a.m. at the Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla.
