WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team dropped their first Presidents' Athletic Conference match of the spring season by a 7-2 margin to Saint Vincent Tuesday afternoon.
W&J dropped all three of their doubles matches on the day. At third doubles,
Nolan Rehrig (Jim Thorpe, Pa. / Jim Thorpe Area) and
Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) put up a strong fight against the Bearcat duo and took their bout into extra points but to no avail as they would ultimately fall, 8-7 (7-3).
The Presidents two wins came at first and second singles as a duo of first-year players, as
Jackson Akers (Logan, W. Va. / Logan) and
Alex Duing (Pittsburgh, Pa. / South Park) both won in straight sets . Akers took a commanding victory as he won in straight sets as he found a rhythm early on and carried that to a quick finish for the West Virginia native (6-3, 6-2). Duing at second singles posted a similar day for the Red & Black, as he won in straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
W&J travels to PAC preseason favorite Allegheny College on Saturday, April 1. The match is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
