NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team dropped both ends of its Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon on the road at Westminster College.
The loss drops W&J to 0-2 in conference play and 6-8 overall. Westminster improves to 4-0 in PAC games and 12-4 overall.
Game One - Westminster 7, W&J 0
The Titans picked up an unearned run in the first inning to take an early lead. Westminster tacked on two more in the third inning with a home run to stretch the lead to 3-0.
The Blue and White pushed three more runs across on four hits in the fourth inning to double its lead. Westminster recorded its final run when they tallied a solo run in the fifth.
W&J finished with six hits in the opener. Pacing those efforts was freshman center fielder
Julia DiPietro-Harvey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice), who finished with a pair of hits.
Junior pitcher
Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) suffered the loss in the circle.
Game Two - Westminster 11, W&J 3 (5 Innings)
W&J took the initial lead in the nightcap. DiPietro-Harvey reached base via an error and scored on a RBI groundout by senior shortstop
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) to give the Red and Black a 1-0 lead.
After Westminster evened the score in the bottom of the first inning, W&J regained a 2-1 lead in the second.
Aliya Schraeder (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) singled and moved to third later in the inning on a single by freshman infielder
Deanna Gratton (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway). Schaeder scored a batter later on a RBI groundout by
Izzy DiPietro-Harvey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice).
That was the last lead of the game for the Presidents. Westminster scored twice in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Titans then added a six-spot in the bottom of the third inning to extend the lead to 9-2.
W&J scored its final run of the game in the top of the fifth inning.
Julia DiPietro-Harvey singled and scored on a RBI double by Eckenrode. Westminster scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, as the visitors took advantage of three W&J errors in the inning.
Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) started and took the loss in game two.
Julia DiPietro-Harvey led the Presidents offensively, as the freshman finished with three hits on the day.
