Presidents move to 9-1 in PAC with decisive sweep of Barons

STEUBENVILLE, Pa. --  The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team totaled 26 runs during a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Franciscan University of Steubenville Wednesday afternoon at Vaccaro Field in Steubenville. The Presidents broke open game one with an eight-run sixth inning in a 11-3 victory. The Red and Black concluded the sweep with a 15-1 win over the Barons in game two.

Game 1 - W&J 11, Franciscan 3

The Presidents tallied a pair of unearned runs before adding another on a RBI single by Sam Schuster (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Fairport Harding) in the top of the fourth. Franciscan countered with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to cut its deficit to 3-1.

W&J broke out in a big way in the top of the sixth inning. The Red and Black put up a crooked number as eight runs scored on eight hits in the frame. Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) opened the inning with a single, stole second and scored on a RBI double by Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny). A batter later, Schuster launched his first collegiate home run over the left center field fence, strengthening the W&J lead to 6-1.

Later in the inning, Trevor Dean (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) connected on a RBI single and Sante scored Dean with an RBI double that made the score 11-1.

Franciscan tallied the final two runs of the game but W&J picked up the comfortbale eight-run win.

Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) and Sante paced the offensive with three hits apiece. Schuster finished with a multi-hit effort and a team-best three RBI.

Shane Fox (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) was credited with the win. The senior right-hander tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Game 2 - W&J 15, Franciscan 1 (7 Innings)

The Presidents did what they needed to do to complete the sweep in game two. The Red and Black scored two runs in the first and added eight more in the second to put things away early.

Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) opened the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first. Sante added a sac fly that later plated LaDuca to make the score 2-0.

A grand slam by Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) highlighted the six-run second inning as W&J extended its lead to 8-0. W&J later led 10-1 after five complete innings.

Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio / Wellington School) and Scheider slugged back-to-back home runs in the sixth to bring the Presidents' lead to 12-1.

W&J added three more runs in the seventh to complete the run-rule victory. John Klein (Vienna, Va./Madison) and Luke Virag (New Kensington, Pa. / Burrell) both produced a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Horvat reached base in all five plate appearances in game two. He finished with a pair of doubles and walked three times. LaDuca had three hits and scored three times.

Zaas and Scheider finished with multi-hit efforts as well. Lutz had a career-high five RBI.

Alex Tomsic (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Blackhawk) picked up his first collegiate victory by tossing three shutout innings. Tomsic did not allow a hit and struck out two.

On Deck: W&J welcomes Waynesburg to Ross Memorial Park for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 15. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
