BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Geneva College. The Golden Tornadoes took the front end of the doubleheader 12-4 in five innings before adding a 10-6 game two victory.
The losses drop W&J to 1-9 in PAC play and 7-15 overall. Geneva improves its standing in the league as they move to 6-4 in the PAC and 13-13 overall.
Game 1 - Geneva 12, W&J 4 (5 Innings)
W&J got out to an early lead when
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) continued to swing a hot bat. Eckenrode smashed a two-run home run to left field to score
Aliya Schraeder (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) and give the Presidents an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Geneva would mount a quick response as they would score once in the second and 11 times in the third to build a 10-run lead.
Once again, the star-studded shortstop Eckenrode would try to start the rally for the Presidents in the top of the fourth. Eckenrode drove in two more runs with a two-run double to deep center field.
The Golden Tornadoes would go on to close out the run-rule win in five innings over the Presidents.
Eckenrode, Schraeder, and
Savannah Keough (Alexandria, Va. / T.C. Williams) each generated two hits for the Presidents while
Kaylee Witner (Freeland, Pa. / MMI Preparatory School),
Emily Schmucker (Latrobe, Pa. / Latrobe), and
Julia DiPietro-Harvey (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Taylor Allderdice) would all add one hit a piece.
Eckenrode finished with all four RBI for the Presidents.
Witner started in the circle, worked four innings and suffered the loss.
Game 2 - Geneva 10, W&J 6
The Presidents and Golden Tornadoes would battle back and forth in the early goings of game two as each offense was clicking. Keough scored on a sacrifice flyout from
Izzy DiPietro-Harvey (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Taylor Allderdice) to tie the matchup with one run each heading into the bottom of the second before Geneva would tack on three more runs.
W&J would respond with three runs of their own as
Julia DiPietro-Harvey would score on a wild pitch while Schmucker and Keough would drive in a run apiece to even the score at 4-4. However, Geneva would tally the next six runs to take a 10-4 lead into the top of the seventh inning.
The Presidents loaded the bases with one out in the seventh and scored twice but could not get any closer as they dropped the contest.
Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md. / Centennial) was tagged with the loss in the circle after coming on in relief. Hinz reached the 100 career strikeout mark in the loss.
On Deck: W&J heads home to face Chatham University for a pair of games for Senior Day on Saturday, April 15. First pitch at Brooks Park is slated for 1 p.m.
