Women's Lacrosse's historic season ends with NCAA First Round loss to Meredith

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team saw its historic season end Saturday evening with a 17-11 setback to Meredith College in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The two teams battled through heavy rainfall throughout the first round game, which was held at Salisbury University's Sea Gull Stadium.

W&J finishes its record-breaking season at 15-4 overall. The 15 wins are a program single-season best. Meredith improves to 17-4 overall and will face third-ranked Salisbury University on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) finished with a team-best four goals, added an assist and seven draw controls in her final game as a President.

A trio of Presidents, Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School), Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley), each scored a pair of goals in Saturday's setback.

Meredith scored the first three goals of the game and led 4-1 midway through the first quarter. W&J trimmed its deficit to a single goal when Jenkins found the back of the net at the 3:54 mark and Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) scored with 1:45 left in the first. Unfortunately for the Presidents, Meredith scored with just eight seconds remaining to take a 5-3 lead after 15 minutes.

The Presidents found their rhythm in the second quarter and battled back to event. Bogats scored back-to-back goals and Labovitz tallied another goal to help W&J pull even at 6-6 midway through the frame. Meredith took an 8-6 lead into halftime with a pair of goals in the final 3:28 of the half.

Neither team could gain much traction offensively during the third quarter. No goals were scored over the final 9:58 of the third as Meredith took a 10-7 lead into the fourth.

Meredith led by at least three goals for the rest of the way before finishing off the 17-11 victory.

Bogats led W&J with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) started and made eight saves in 60 minutes of action.

Reese Walker had an eight-point effort (2g, 6a) to lead the Angels. Meredith goalkeeper Madeline Horrell made 13 saves in net.

W&J out-shot Meredith by a 33-30 margin. Both teams finished with 15 draw controls and 13 ground balls.

Notes: W&J saw three more milestones surpassed in Saturday's contest. Aisa Uhler eclipsed the 100-goal mark for her career. Sarah Labovitz established a new single-season school record with 115 draw controls. Kaitlyn Brown became just the second goalkeeper in W&J women's lacrosse history to record 400 saves for her career.
