Offense finds its groove as Women's Soccer rolls past Penn State Altoona

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Sophomore Audrey Chapman (Elkins Park, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) recorded her first collegiate hat trick to guide the Washington and Jefferson women's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over visiting Penn State Altoona in a non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

The six goals are the most against a Division III opponent since W&J scored seven against Bethany on Oct. 25, 2017.

The win is the second in a row for W&J, who improves to 4-1-1 overall. That mark gives W&J its best start to a season since 2015.

The Presidents would score first in the 10th minute of the game with Chapman found the back of the net for the off an assist from Ana Maria Duenas (Quito, Ecuador / University San Francisco De Quito).

W&J wasted little time adding to its lead, as Duenas scored her first collegiate goal, unassisted, in the 15th minute to put the Presidents up 2-0. Chapman then tallied her second goal of the afternoon in the 19th minute of play assisted by junior Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township), who would then take the torch and score the next Presidents goal less than a minute later off an assist from Duenas.

Maura Heberle (Hookstown, Pa. / South Side Beaver) would score the last goal in the first half for the Red & Black. Heberle's first collegiate goal came in the 24th minute of play. The unassisted tally would give W&J a 5-0 lead at the break.

Chapman would net the hat trick with an unassisted score in the 67th minute of play. Mallorie Smith would score the lone goal for the Lady Lions.

W&J out-shot Penn State Altoona by a deficit of 45-4. A total of 23 Presidents shots were on goal. The Red & Black also outnumbered the Lad Lions in corner kicks 13-0.

Senior goalie Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) and junior Kalea Umali (Pittsburgh Pa. / Shaler) split time, each recording 45 minutes on the afternoon.

W&J will head to Thiel as the open Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 pm.
