Bethany downs Volleyball in straight sets

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision on the road Thursday evening at Bethany College.

W&J holds a 5-7 overall record while Bethany improves to 8-4 overall in 2023. Thursday's match was played as a non-conference match. The two teams will meet for a conference contest in Washington, Pa. on Oct. 10.

The Presidents had chances to claim either of the first two sets Thursday evening. W&J recorded six of the opening eight points before eventually building a 10-4 lead on a kill by Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park. Bethany battled back to pull within a pair before a kill by Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) made it 16-13 Presidents.

A pair of Bethany attack errors put the W&J lead at 21-17 later in the set. However, the Bison responded with six of the next eight points to even the score at 23-23. A kill by Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) gave W&J a chance to secure the set with set point. Unfortunately for the Presidents, the host Bison scored four of the final five points to pull out a 26-24 win in the first.

A four-point run allowed Bethany to push out to a 13-8 advantage in the second set. Rian Benz (Strongsville, Ohio / Holy Name) helped W&J cut the deficit to 15-13 with four kills during a run by the Presidents. Benz eventually used a service ace to the put the Presidents in front 17-16. The two teams traded points from there and the score was eventually evened at 23-23. The Bison were once again able to get things done at the end of the set. Bethany tallied the final two points for a 25-23 set two victory.

The Bison blew things open in the third set en route to the sweep. After the score was initially even at 3-3, the Green and White used an extended 13-3 run to take a double-digit advantage. Bethany pretty much coasted from there. The Bison tallied the final six points to take the third by a decisive 25-10 margin.

Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) posted a team-best six kills. Benz recorded a team-best three service aces. Beyonce Pierce (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg) and Little both tallied two total blocks.

Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) posted 13 assists while Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) finished with a team-high 15 digs.
