WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman forward
Justin Parker Wyatt (Coatesville, Pa. / Unionville) assisted the game-tying goal before scoring the eventual game-winning tally to help propel the Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Hiram College Wednesday evening under the lights at Alexandre Stadium.
The non-conference win improves W&J to 1-0-1 on the season. Hiram, who had previously earned victories over Pitt-Greensburg and Thiel, sees its record drop to 2-1 in 2023.
Jimmy Zeilmann opened the scoring in the 24th minute of action when he collected a loose ball in the box and scored on a free kick after a W&J foul in the defensive zone.
W&J responded with the equalizer a little more than 10 minutes later when freshman
Jimmy Gogol (Reistertown, Md. / Westminster) took a pass from
Ethan Bowser (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) and tucked a rocket shot inside the left post to even the score at 1-1. The goal was the first for Gogol and the first score for the Presidents in 2023.
The Presidents and Terriers entered halftime with the score knotted up at 1-1.
The Red and Black appeared poised to take its first lead early in the second half when they had multiple chances from point blank range. However, a Hiram save and a subsequent shot off a rebound soared high over the net.
After a W&J turnover in the defensive zone, Jayden Julian tallied an unassisted score in the 52nd minute to help Hiram regain the lead at 2-1.
Less than two minutes later, the Presidents were able to once again even the score. A nice give and go helped W&J break down the Hiram defense on a 2-on-1 chance.
Nolan Agostoni (Latrobe, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) was able to beat the Hiram keeper on a 1-on-1 after a perfect pass from Wyatt. The Agostoni goal made the score 2-2 in the 54th minute.
The score remained tied until the 67th minute of play when it was Wyatt's turn to record his first collegiate goal. Wyatt's classmate,
Tavan Schoenberger (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown), was able to set him up for the go-ahead score that give W&J the 3-2 edge.
From that point forward, W&J goalkeeper
Charles Boldosser (Westminster, Md. / South Carroll) was able to preserve the lead with three of his four saves down the stretch.
The Terriers held a 13-10 advantage in shots and a 6-5 margin in shots on goal. W&J recorded a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
W&J welcomes unbeaten Mount Union to Alexandre Stadium for a non-conference tilt on Saturday, Sept. 9. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
