WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Despite competing in all three sets, the Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Oglethorpe University in Friday action at Hermann Court as part of the Quaker Classic at Wilmington College.
The Stormy Petrels claimed the match in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-19 in the match Friday evening.
W&J trailed 10-3 early on in the initial set before responding with seven of the next eight points to trim the deficit to 11-10. Later in the set,
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio / Benjamin Logan) tallied a service ace to trim the gap to 16-15. Oglethorpe eventually pulled away, as they recorded six of the final nine points to take a 25-20 set one victory.
The Presidents fell behind early on again in the second set. Consecutive kills by
Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) and
Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) cut the deficit to 15-13. However, just as they did in the first set, the Stormy Petrels maintained its lead en route to the four-point set victory.
Despite an early lead in the third set, W&J was unable to hold that momentum through the duration of the set. After consecutive service aces by
Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio / Fairbanks) cut the Oglethorpe lead to 11-10, the Stormy Petrels tallied seven-straight points to swell its lead. The Presidents were able to cut the deficit to five points (23-18) but could get no closer.
Carmichael produced four kills and a solo block in the loss.
Bella Anzevino (Brunswick, Ohio/Buckeye) equaled the match high with 13 digs.
W&J faces Blackburn (3 p.m.) and host Wilmington (5 p.m.) in action on Saturday, Sept. 9. The Presidents and Quakers will meet for the second time in as many weekends.
