FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 4-2 road loss to Fredonia University Friday afternoon in New York.
The loss drops the Presidents to 2-1 on the year. The win improves the Blue Devils to 1-2 in 2023.
The host Blue Devils tallied a pair of first half goals to take a lead into the break. Gabrielle Irwin netted a score in the fifth minute before a scoring tally by Brianna Grazen in the 28th minute made it 2-0 Fredonia.
W&J cut the deficit in half early in the second half when
Audrey Chapman (Elkins Park, Pa. Phil-Mont Christian Academy) scored an unassisted goal in the 49th minute.
Fredonia effectively put the game out of reach with goals in the 64th minute by Brooke Grazen and a second score from Irwin in the 70th minute made the score 4-1.
Makenna Mann (Herndon, Va. South Lakes) scored an unassisted goal for the Presidents in the 88th minute.
Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) made 12 saves in the loss.
The host Blue Devils held narrow advantages in shots (18-17) and shots on goal (16-11). W&J held a 7-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
W&J faces Oswego State tomorrow at the Blue Devil Classic at Fredonia. Game time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
