WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College football team logged a high-scoring victory against conference foe Geneva, 73-21.
Â
The Presidents logged their highest scoring output since the 2007 football season where W&J bested Bethany, 77-39 on Nov. 10.
Â
W&J enters their second-win streak of the season, winning two straight. The victory uplifts the Presidents to 5-1 on the season and in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
Â
Jacob Pugh (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) highlighted the Saturday afternoon win recording his third six-touchdown performance of the season. He also amassed 324 yards through the air. After today's outing, Pugh has now passed the 6,000-career passing yard mark and currently only needs to pass for 11 more passing touchdowns to pass Chris Edwards and Jason Baer to become fourth in career passing touchdowns at W&J.
Â
John Peduzzi (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian Academy) logged a career day with five receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Peduzzi now ranks fourth all-time in receiving touchdowns and is 81 away from slotting into fifth all-time in receiving yards.
Jacob Macosko (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) also hauled in two touchdowns on five receptions for 84 yard to lead the receiving room.
Â
Avery Keith (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) led the defense with two tackles for loss, one sack and four total tackles.
Dawson Dietz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) also contributed one tackle for loss, one sack and six total tackles. The defense caused a season-high three forced fumbles with two being recovered as turnovers.
Justin Johns (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional)Â also logged eight tackles in the outing, moving him to second all-time at W&J in career tackles with 318. Eric Field currently holds the record with 348 as Johns needs just 31 additional tackles to become W&J's newest all-time total tackles leader.
Â
The Golden Tornadoes opened the bout with a near 10-minute drive for the game's first touchdown. W&J mustered a response with a touchdown pass to Macosko to even the score at seven. Following the score, Geneva ripped off their biggest play of the game on a 84-yard catch and run for six. W&J nearly matched the big-play score with a62-yard touchdown of their own by Peduzzi. The Presidents closed out the first quarter of play with a seven-yard passing touchdown thrown from Pugh to Macosko, up 21-14.
Â
The second quarter was littered with offense for the Presidents, growing their lead to 42-14 before the half.
Zach Cernuto (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) kicked off the scoring barrage with a two-yard receiving touchdown in the opening minutes of play. With the ball back after a failed Geneva drive,
Kobe Derosa (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) found his way into the endzone for the first time with a four-yard rushing score. The W&J defense would record one of it's most dominant efforts on the following drive, creating a three-and-out with three-consecutive sacks. The defensive prowess led to the Presidents sixth touchdown of the day as Peduzzi hauled in his second of the day from Pugh.
Â
W&J kept it's foot on the gas in the second half, seeing Derosa tally his second-rushing touchdown of the day on a one-yard rush at the goal line. Geneva responded with their last score of the outing, bringing the score to 49-21 in the midst of the third quarter. Pugh completed a mid-range pass to senior running back
Owen Petrisek (Ellsworth, Pa./Bentworth) that he would take to the endzone for a 60-yard touchdown to close out the quarter, 56-14.
Â
In the fourth, W&J tacked on a 19-yard rushing touchdown from
Dom Barca (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and a 20-yard field goal from
Deven Wyandt (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle).
Chris Hood (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) also stripped and scored a touchdown following the field goal from Wyandt to close the bout out at 73-21.
Â
W&J remains home for game two of their three-game homestand to face the No. 7 ranked team in the country, Grove City, on Saturday (Oct. 19). The bout has a scheduled start time of 6:05 p.m.
