WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore forward Nathan Plotner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) finished with a career-high 29 points and 21 rebounds to lift the Washington & Jefferson College men's basketball team over the visiting Baldwin Wallace in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium by an 80-73 score.
The victory elevates the Presidents to a 2-1 overall record before they enter conference play next Wednesday (Nov. 20). The loss is the first of the year for the Yellow Jackets and drops them to a 1-1 overall record in non-conference play.
Plotner posted a career-high game against Baldwin Wallace. The sophomore standout scored a career-high in points and rebounds racking up 29 and 21, respectively. Plotner is averaging a double-double after putting together his second double-double of three total chances so far this season. He currently owns a 16.3 points per game and 13.7 rebounds per game average.
Joining Plotner in double figures was junior Matt Seidl (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) with 14 points and sophomore Matthew Carte (Ravenswood, W.Va./Ravenswood) who tallied 12. Carte also tallied the game high in assists logging 5.
Both teams fought a hard first half as the score remained mostly in favor of Baldwin Wallace. The Yellow Jackets began the game by gaining a 10-6 lead and extending it to a 19-12 lead before the Presidents answered with a 7-0 point streak to take the lead, 20-19. The next five minutes of play were a back-and-forth battle for the lead heading into the half. The Yellow Jackets tied things up at 26 with 2:28 remaining in the half. The Presidents went on a 10-point rally consisting of buckets from Plotner, Seidl and Quinton Burlenski (Bridgeport, Ohio/Central Catholic) to gain a 36-26 lead at the halftime buzzer.
W&J led the rest of the game with the Yellow Jackets closest opportunity being down four points with 5:52 on the clock before the Presidents pulled away again, eventually winning by a seven-point margin, 80-73.
The Presidents enjoyed solid shooting throughout the night. The Red and Black converted at a 45.1 percent clip (32-of-71) and made 13-of-21 free throw attempts (61.9 percent). W&J capitalized on second chance points besting Baldwin Wallace by a 28-13 margin as well as a 13-6 difference in fast break points.
W&J travels next to Steubenville, Ohio to take on their first PAC opponent, Franciscan. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday (Nov. 20).
