BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Sophomore
Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio) racked up double-digit kills in the outing as the Washington & Jefferson volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of host Geneva College Friday evening in a match played at Metheny Fieldhouse.
W&J claimed the sweep by set scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-17 to further their win streak to five. Geneva ends their season with a 9-20 record overall and 1-9 mark in PAC play as W&J elevates to 16-12 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The win now guarantees a spot in the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament for W&J in their second-straight appearance.
Despite Geneva jumping out to 3-0 to start the first set, W&J bounced back immediately with five straight points. Two kills by Little and a kill from
Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) helped W&J trade the next few points until the score sat at 10-9 in favor of the Presidents. A kill from
Bella Anzevino (Brunswick, Ohio/Buckeye) began the next five-point rally with the aid of a kill from
Abby Oldham (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and two service aces from
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy), 15-9. From there the Presidents slowly took off and traded points with the Golden Tornadoes to claim the first set 25-17.
Carrying the momentum, W&J leaped to a 9-3 lead in the second set. Geneva was able to chip a few points back in their favor but was ultimately overcome by the Presidents as kills from Beyoncé Pierce (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg), Blough, Fetsko, and Little as well as a service ace by Oldham catapulted the Presidents to a second set win, 25-13.
Geneva fought back hard in set three as both teams played through a back and forth set until the score was tied at 14-14. W&J was able to tally the next eight straight points to take a 22-14 advantage. The GT's put up a final three points before being shut down by the Presidents as they wrapped set three by a 25-17 margin to complete the regular season ending sweep.
Little marshalled a top-tier showing against Geneva, logging the game-high in kills with 16 and posting a .652 season-high hitting percentage which sits just below her season high that currently sits at a .667. Little's effort tonight excelled her to the fifth-best hitting percentage in all of NCAA Division III Volleyball. Fetsko also tacked on eight kills to aid in the offensive efforts.
Aiding in their success was
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) and
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) who logged 16 and 14 assists, respectively. McFarland held down the back row with 21 digs on the outing.
W&J now awaits the results of Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference matchups to see who their opponent will be in the opening round of the conference tournament.
