WASHINGTON, Pa. – Senior outfielder
Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) finished with three hits and four RBI to help lead the Washington & Jefferson College baseball to a 10-5 victory over Pitt-Greensburg on Friday evening at Ross Memorial Park.
The win improves the Presidents to 1-3 overall. The Bobcats remain winless at 0-3.
Pitt-Greensburg opened the scoring with a pair of doubles in the top of the first inning. Junior infielder
Knox Meier (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to tie the score at 1-1.
The Bobcats used an RBI groundout to regain the lead with a run in the top of the third inning.
W&J took control of the game with a five-run outburst in the third inning. After a pitching change by UPG, the Presidents recorded five runs on four hits. Junior shortstop
Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) opened the frame with a leadoff double before advancing to third on a single by junior outfielder
Drew Garth (Glenshaw, Pa./North Hills).
Lutz evened the score at 2-2 with an RBI single to left to plate LaDuca. Three-straight walks followed which allowed W&J to push in front at 4-2. W&J pushed across two more runs in the frame. Junior infielder
Nate Hess (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) made it 6-2 with an RBI single to score
Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic).
A two-run two-out single by Lutz extended the lead to 8-2 after five innings. UPG made things interesting with three unearned runs in the top of the sixth, which cut the deficit to 8-5.
W&J manufactured a run in the bottom of the sixth. A sac fly by
Sam Schuster (Fairport Harbor, Ohio/Fairport Harding) brought home Lehner to make it 9-5.
The Presidents closed the scoring in the bottom of the seventh with a single run. Garth walked with two outs and stole second base to move into scoring position. A two-out triple by Lutz scored Garth to make it 10-5.
Lutz finished with three hits and four RBI to pace the offense. Garth reached base four times and scored two runs. Lehner added two hits and two runs scored.
Sophomore pitcher
Anthony Pass () tossed four innings to pick up the win. Pass struck out six and walked two. He allowed just one earned run.
Junior pitcher
Ethan Marszalek (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) looked sharp in relief. Marszalek tossed three hitless innings with five strikeouts.
W&J hosts La Roche for a non-conference game on Monday, March 4. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
