ANDERSON, Ind. – The Anderson University Ravens rallied late to beat the Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team by a 9-8 score in overtime Wednesday afternoon in Indiana.
The loss drops W&J to 1-5 overall. Anderson improves to 3-5 with the win.
Both teams scored three goals during a fast moving first quarter.
Aiden Herman (West End, N.C. / Pinecrest) and
Nathan Petrarco (North Huntingdon, Pa. / Norwin) netted back-to-back goals to give W&J a 2-0 lead to open the game. After Anderson responded back with consecutive goals to even the score,
Zach Mey (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) scored with 2:57 remaining in the quarter. AU answered with a late score to tie the game up at 15 minutes.
Anderson scored the first two goals of the second quarter to pull in front by a 5-3 margin. Petrarco had the final score of the half by either team, helping W&J trim the deficit to a single goal at the break.
W&J came out strong in the third quarter and scored all three goals during the frame. Herman scored twice and Mey tallied another to give W&J a 7-5 lead heading into the fourth.
Anderson scored four of the final five goals to record the comeback victory. After
Dylan Batche (Pottstown, Pa. / Pottsgrove) scored with 5:23 to play to give W&J an 8-7 lead. Anderson responded with the game-tying score less than a minute later at 4:48.
Neither team would score over the final four-plus minutes and the game went to overtime. AU took advantage of a turnover off a clear and scored at the 2:18 mark to secure the game-winning tally.
Herman led the offense with three goals. Petrarco finished with two goals and two assists, six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Mey recorded two goals and six ground balls.
Henry Beardwood (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum School) made nine saves in the loss.
W&J lost despite out-shooting AU by a 42-26 margin. The Presidents held a 23-17 advantage in shots on goal. Anderson was able to turn the tide behind an 15-8 save differential.
The Presidents open conference play at Allegheny College on Thursday, March 28. Start time in Meadville in set for 7 p.m.
