W&J earns Thursday split at Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Washington & Jefferson College softball team played through a pair of close contests Thursday afternoon at the Spring Games in Central Florida. The Presidents secured a split during the doubleheader action. W&J pulled out a tight 3-2 decision in their first game of the day, avenging a previous 3-2 loss to Old Westbury earlier in the week. Elmhurst later topped W&J by a 4-2 score in the second game of the day.

W&J 3, Old Westbury 2

In its rematch with SUNY Old Westbury, W&J would open the scoring in top of the first inning when Austine Kinney (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) would drive in Miranda Rinehart (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) with an RBI single.

Rinehart would be the only batter to cross home plate for either team during the first three innings. Old Westbury would score an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to knot things up at 1-1.

The Presidents would answer the call and put up another run in the top of the 5th to regain the lead, 2-1.

Rinehart would start the two-out rally with a double to deep left center field. Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville), the starting pitcher for W&J, would follow with an RBI single up the middle to give the Presidents a 2-1 advantage.

The score remained 2-1 W&J until the top of the seventh inning when the Presidents tacked on an insurance run. Hannah Allen (Harrison City, Pa. / Penn Trafford) drew a two out walk which was followed by a hit by pitch taken by Rinehart. With two runners on for the Presidents, Petrowski would help her own cause once again. The senior lined a ball down the right field line to score Allen and stretch the lead to 3-1.

The Panthers made things interesting in the seventh. A leadoff walk and two singles helped Old Westbury close the deficit to 3-2. With two on and two out, Petroswki recorded the final out via a called third strike to end the game.

Petrowski earned the win to improve her record to 3-1 on the season. The senior tossed all seven innings, allowed one run and recorded two strikeouts in the circle.

Elmhurst 4, W&J 2

Despite getting an early lead on an RBI single from Rinehart, Elmhurst would put a solo run on the board in both the top of the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead 2-1.

The Blue Jays would then get two runners across in the top of the sixth to put some distance between themselves and the Red & Black. W&J would bring on a pinch hitter, Kyra Blauth (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills), who would drive in the lone run in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice before Elmhurst ended the inning without further damage.

Both teams would go scoreless in the seventh inning to end the game with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Blue Jays.

Ashley Theimer (Woodstock, Md. / Marriotts Ridge) recorded a multi-hit effort to lead the Presidents' offense in game two.

Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md. / Centennial) would be handed the loss in the circle for the Presidents. Hinz threw all seven innings, only giving up two earned runs and registering five strikeouts during the outing.

Up Next: W&J is scheduled to play two more games Friday at the Spring Games. The Presidents will take on Buffalo State next at 9 a.m. followed by a matchup versus Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 11:15 a.m.
