MEADVILLE, Pa. –
Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) registered a game-high six points to lead the Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team to a narrow 12-11 win over the host Allegheny Gators on Saturday in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The game between the Presidents and Gators was a rematch of the 2023 PAC Tournament Championship game, which was a 14-10 win for the Red and Black.
The win is the second-straight overall for the Presidents. W&J jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the opening quarter of play.
The Presidents got consecutive scores from
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic),
Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and
Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) to open the game. The two teams traded the next four scores over the final 8:44 of the first. Heck and Kloehn both found the back of the net twice in the first.
Allegheny turned the tide in the second quarter. The hosts scored used three-straight goals to eventually even the score at 6-6 when Lauren Petrarca scored with 47 seconds left before halftime.
However, Kloehn had the quick response, scoring off a pass from Jenkins with just 30 seconds remaining before the break to give W&J a 7-6 advantage at the half.
After Allegheny opened the third quarter scoring with an Ashley Amato goal to even things up, W&J responded with three-straight goals to take a three-goal cushion. Jenkins scored at the 9:59 mark before a man-up goal by
Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman) came just 39 seconds later. Uhler tacked on an unassisted goal at the seven-minute mark to make it 10-7 Presidents. Neither team scored over the final seven minutes of the third, which allowed the Presidents to take a three-goal advantage into the final 15 minutes.
Jenkins scored twice in the fourth to help preserve the lead. Her man-up goal at the 8:29 mark was the final W&J goal of the day. The Presidents would have to hold on late, as Allegheny scored twice in the final 6:12. A goal with 1:23 to play brought the Gators within a goal at 12-11.
W&J was able to win the ensuing draw control, as
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) secured the possession for the Presidents. W&J was able to run out the remaining time to take the big conference win in the opener.
Jenkins finished with four goals and two assists for a game-high six points. Jenkins added four draw controls. Kloehn registered her second-straight hat trick with three goals. Uhler and Heck had two goals apiece. Holland finished with three points (one goal, two assists) along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) remained steady in net. The senior registered nine saves and picked up three ground balls in the win.
In addition,
Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) recorded two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Bogats had a game-high seven draw controls.
