Petrowski tosses game two no-hitter, accounts for seven RBI as W&J sweeps Franciscan

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Senior pitcher Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) used her arm and her bat to power the Washington & Jefferson College softball team to a sweep over visiting Franciscan University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Brooks Park.

The sweep improves the Presidents to 10-14 overall and puts the Red and Black even in conference play at 7-7.

Game One – W&J 9, Franciscan 1 (Game One – 5 Innings)

The Presidents jumped on the Barons from the get-go. The Red and Black scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning.

After a walk to Aliya Schraeder (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) opened the first, Savannah Keough (Alexandria, Va. / T.C. Williams) followed with an RBI triple down the left field line. W&J loaded the bases after a walk by Kyra Blauth (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Mirranda Rinehart (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was hit by a pitch. Petrowski came through with a two-run single back up the middle to make the score 3-0.

W&J tacked on another run in the bottom of the second when Keough doubled with one out and scored a batter later with an RBI single to center by Blauth.

Franciscan scored its only run of the day in the top of the third inning. After two out, back-to-back hits coupled with a throwing error allowed the visitors to tally an unearned run.

W&J tallied two runs in the bottom of the third. A pair of singles, an error by Franciscan and a sac fly by Schraeder helped push the lead to 6-1.

The Presidents put up three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hannah Allen (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) singled up the middle to lead off the frame before Rinehart was hit by another pitch. A batter later, Petrowski drove in Allen and advanced Rinehart to third with a single.

Two more runs scored in the inning, as an RBI groundout by Kaylee Witner (Freeland, Pa. / MMI Preparatory School) scored Rinehart. Petrowski later scored on a passed ball during the frame to advance the lead to 9-1.

W&J ended the game early when they recorded the final three outs in the top of the fifth.

Witner worked all five innings in the circle. Witner improved her record to 3-3 this season. Witner allowed one unearned run on four hits. Witner struck out three batters and walked none in the victory.

Game Two – W&J 15, Franciscan 0 (5 Innings)

Petrowski was the story in game two. The senior tossed the five-inning no-hitter to lead the Presidents to victory. Petrowski struck out six and walked two as she earned the shutout win. Petrowski has a 5-5 record this spring in the circle.

Petrowski helped herself at the plate as well in the nightcap. The senior finished three-for-three with four RBI.

DiPietro-Harvey finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. The sophomore centerfielder went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI.

W&J scored three times in the opening inning. Rinehart and Petrowski both had run-scoring singles in the first.

The Presidents put up four more runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Red and Black collected three hits and took advantage of two errors during the frame.

DiPietro-Harvey and Schraeder singled to help load the bases. Keough produced an RBI groundout to stretch the lead to 4-0. A throwing error by the Barons shortstop helped W&J bring home two more runs a batter later. W&J added one more run in the frame as Petrowski singled home Allen to grow the lead to 7-0 after two innings.

An RBI triple by DiPietro-Harvey and an RBI single by Schraeder stretched the lead to 9-0 in the third.

W&J scored six times on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Petrowski opened the scoring in the inning with a two-run single that made the score 11-0. After Petrowski scored on a wild pitch, Sydney Lang (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) smacked an RBI triple to left field to bring home another run.

DiPietro-Harvey continued her strong game two with an RBI single to right center to score Lang to make it 14-0. W&J tacked on one final run when Ashley Theimer (Woodstock, Md./Marriotts Ridge) singled home DiPietro-Harvey.

Petrowski finished off the no-hitter with three outs in the fifth.

DiPietro-Harvey and Petrowski had three hits in game two while Schraeder logged a multi-hit game with two.
