STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Fifth-seeded Washington & Jefferson College was knocked out of the PAC Championship Tournament by fourth-seeded Franciscan University in a 5-0 loss Tuesday afternoon in the PAC Quarterfinal match hosted at the Belleview Tennis Courts.
The Barons took an early lead over the Presidents, claiming each of the doubles matches to put the Presidents in an early hole. Sophomores Jackson Akers (Logan, W. Va. / Logan) and Alex Duing (South Park, Pa. / South Park) fell just short of a victory at doubles one, edged out by Travis Mistry and Aidan Palladino in a score of 8-5. At both doubles two and three, W&J was upended in final scores of 8-2.
Only two singles matches were completed due to the Barons clinching the match. Duing was retired in straight sets by Aaron Heinlein at singles two with a final score of 6-0, 6-0. Akers put up a competitive first set at first singles, taking a 6-3 loss before being swept by Travis Mistry in the second set with a score of 6-0.
Third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles went unfinished per PAC Championship Tournament rules.
The loss marks the end of season for the Presidents and first-year head coach Matt Lynch.
