WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson college softball team split its season ending doubleheader against Bethany College Saturday afternoon at Brooks Park. The Presidents took game one by a 2-1 score but fell behind early and suffered an 11-3 loss in game two.
The split ends the season for the softball team with an overall record of 12-18 and 9-11 in conference play. W&J entered the day with hopes of qualifying for the upcoming six-team Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament. W&J's (9-11) split with Bethany (11-9) coupled with a Waynesburg (10-10) split with Westminster eliminated the Presidents from tournament contention.
Game One – W&J 2, Bethany 1
A pair of sophomores guided the Presidents to the game one victory. The bat of
Kyra Blauth (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and the arm of
Kaylee Witner (Freeland, Pa./MMI Preparatory School) propelled the Presidents to take game one.
After two scoreless innings to open the game, the Bison tallied an unearned run in the third inning to take the 1-0 lead.
W&J responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth to even the score at 1-1.
Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) singled to center and advanced to second with one out. Blauth delivered a double to left center to score Petrowski.
The Bison threatened in the top of the sixth but the Presidents escaped with the score remaining 1-1.
W&J came through with the game-deciding score in the bottom of the sixth.
Savannah Keough (Alexandria, Va. / T.C. Williams) singled to lead off the frame before advancing to second on a hit by
Hannah Allen (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Blauth followed with a double to right center to score Keough for the go-ahead run.
That was all the support Witner needed. The sophomore finished off the complete game effort. She allowed just one unearned run and scattered eight hits. Witner struck out two and did not issue a walk. Witner concludes a breakthrough season in the circle. She finishes with a 2.24 earned-run average logged over 84.1 innings.
Aliya Schraeder (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and Blauth both registered multi-hit games in the win.
Game Two – Bethany 11, W&J 3
With both teams facing a must win situation to earn a tournament berth, Bethany scored early and rode that momentum to a big 11-3 victory in five innings.
The Bison took advantage of two errors and scored five unearned runs in the second inning. The visitors scored three more times in each of the third and fourth innings to continue to build their lead.
The Red & Black would put up two in the third and one in the bottom of the fifth.
In the third,
Ashley Theimer (Woodstock, Md./Marriotts Ridge) would score on an RBI single through the left side by Schraeder. An error on the following play by the Bethany shortstop would allow
Julia DiPietro-Harvey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) to score and tally the Presidents second run of the inning.
Needing a pair of runs to extend the game, W&J loaded the bases in the fifth as DiPietro-Harvey reached on an error in front of hits by Keough and Blauth. An RBI groundout by Allen made the score 11-3 but W&J would leave a pair in scoring position as the final out was recorded.
Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) would take the loss in the circle for the Presidents. The senior allowed five unearned runs in the loss.
Petrowski, Keough,
Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and
Abby Fullem (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) were all honored prior to Saturday's doubleheader during Senior Recognition.
