WASHINGTON Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson College women's tennis team picked up their first Presidents' Athletic Conference win under head coach
Matt Lynch, 5-2.
The Presidents move to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play, boasting a 2-1 record at home.
Nidhi Pulicherla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) and
Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) led the charge for W&J in the doubles category with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. The tandem of
Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch High School) and
Paisley Cole (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna High School) dropped a close decision at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, knotting the doubles score at one. W&J's own
Emma Humphrey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and
Jaelyn Kennedy (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) managed to fend off the Barons at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 win to put W&J up 1-0 in team score.
W&J saw mixed results in singles but managed to pull away due to necessary three-set wins from Pulicherla and Loomis at the top singles spots. Pulicherla took a back-and-forth No. 1 singles match 2-6, 7-5 (7-3), 6-3. Loomis also dropped her first set at No. 2 singles but worked her way back into the win column for the win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
After dropping No. 3 and 4 singles, the Presidents secured their first conference victory of the season with wins by Humphrey and Gumto. Humphrey took a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles while Gumto managed a win at No. 6 singles 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Presidents will remain in PAC play this Friday (Sept. 20) as they take on Thiel. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m.
