PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team logged their fifth all-time win over Carlow and third-straight since the 2013 season in a 3-1 win this evening.
After a slow start to the season, the Presidents have won three-straight matches to move to a 6-7 overall. The team has won six of their last seven games including wins over Division II Point Park, Oberlin, Fredonia, RIT and Westminster.
The first set was handled in a swift manner by the Celtics after growing a 6-1 lead in the early going. Despite efforts to make their offensive presence known in the first, W&J would succumb to the Celtics clicking offensive unit in the first set, losing 25-18.
W&J quickly rebounded, growing their own 7-1 lead in the second set, growing their lead to 17-9 at one point in the set.
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) would close out set two with a service ace to even the bout a one set each.
The Presidents piled it on in the third set growing a lead of 18-4. Despite the late comeback attempt by the Celtics, setter
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) registered a kill to snap the comeback effort. W&J didn't manage an immediate lead in the fourth set but refocused to take the final set to a score of 25-20.
Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) led the Presidents in kills with 12 accompanied by
Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) with nine and
Abby Oldham (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) with seven. Aiding in the offensive attackers was Moorhouse and
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) who racked up 20 and 15 assists, respectively.
Leading the defensive efforts was the trio of Blough, Little and Oldham who all tallied two blocks each. Little logged her career-high in digs with 15 against the Celtics followed by McFarland with 14.
W&J returns home this weekend for the W&J Tri where they will host Bethany and Penn-State Altoona on Saturday (Sept. 21). Their first match will be against the Bison with a scheduled start time of 11:00 a.m.
