WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team fell to the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets, 3-1.
The loss effectively snaps a six consecutive game win streak by the Presidents, dropping to team to 9-8 on the season prior to conference play.
The Yellow Jackets came into the bout clicking offensively and defensively as they grew a quick 19-10 lead. Being shut down on offense, Balwin Wallace managed to take a swift 25-13 set one victory.
A more back-and-forth set followed in the second, as both teams traded point spurts. With shades of the first set, the Yellow Jackets grew another large lead, 18-2 in the midst of the set. W&J managed an uphill comeback, entering a 13-3 run to win their first set of the match, 25-21. Sophomore outside hitter
Rian Benz (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) closed out the set victory with two crucial kills for the Presidents.
With plenty of regained momentum, Baldwin Wallace closed out the third set 25-12, scoring the final six points of the set in succession. The Presidents posted a more competitive fourth set, but were ultimately halted by the Baldwin Wallace attack, 25-16.
Benz tallied 10 kills for the Presidents followed by
Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) with nine. Freshman
Alexandra Ash (Richmond, Ohio/Edison) posted a career showing against the Yellow Jackets, logging eight kills, four total blocks and one dig.
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) headed the Presidents setting room with 20 assists accompanied by
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) with 12. Libero
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) headed the defense this evening with 19 digs.
W&J will host their annual Alumni Match Saturday (Sept. 28), prior to entering their first Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup of the season against Franciscan, Saturday (Oct. 5). Opening serve against the Barons is set for 12 p.m.
