WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team claim an 80-54 win over Waynesburg Saturday afternoon on the road.
Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) led the offensive charge with 15 points in 27 minutes of play. Cherry went 5-of-8 from the three-point line and tied her prior single-game high in made triples. Jacey Mullen (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) and Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) picked up 12 points each. Marina Grado (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) racked up a career-high 11 points in the outing.
Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the team with 11 rebounds and a game-high six assists.
W&J popped out to an 11-4 lead after Loutsion opened the game strong with a made three and two free throws for the Presidents first five points. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 10-3-point push to tie the game at 14 with 1:53 left in the first quarter. A layup by Riley DeRubbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) concluded the first 10 minutes with a score of 16-14 in favor of the Presidents.
W&J showcased stellar defense in the second quarter only allowing six points from the opposition while putting up 20 points of their own to head into the second half ahead 36-20. Hannah Archer (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye) put up eight of the twenty points sinking two shots from beyond the arc in the effort.
Both teams broke even in the third quarter tallying 16 points each. Cherry scored twice from downtown joined by Loutsion who scored once from three as well to contribute nine of the 16 points in the third. DeRubbo added a lone free throw to the Red & Black's score while Mullen logged the final six points of the quarter for the Presidents.
In the final ten minutes of action, the Presidents scored 28 points to solidify the win with a final score of 80-54.
The Presidents caused 14 turnovers throughout the game and committed nine steals while taking advantage of both with 11 fast break points.
W&J is set to host Presidents' Athletic Conference opponent Franciscan next on Wednesday (Jan. 15). Start time is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
