WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team (9-3, 5-3) closed out the regular season with a 7-0 sweep against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (6-8, 1-7).
The Presidents successfully regrouped following their last two matches by sweeping doubles and winning the first team point in a controlling fashion, 1-0. Junior captain
Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and freshman
Keiran Moorhead (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The freshman tandem of
Bella Graham (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and
Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) won at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-1. Finally, freshman
Austyn Paugh (Jane Lew, W.Va./Notre Dame) and sophomore
Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) complete the sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Presidents took this momentum into singles as Hamade won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 singles position. Moorhead won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Paugh won 6-2, 6-0, and Graham won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 and No. 2 singles to give the Presidents the overall win.
Additionally, Loomis and sophomore
Paisley Cole (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) each won their singles matches in a third-set tiebreaker to complete the overall sweep.
The Presidents will head into the Presidents' Athletic Conference playoffs as the No. 4 seed. They will host the No. 5 seeded Geneva Golden Tornadoes at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center on Tuesday (Oct. 14). Doubles matches will begin at 5:00 p.m. and singles matches will follow thereafter.
