Women’s Volleyball Upended by Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's volleyball team (10-9, 5-3) lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference match to the visiting Grove City Wolverines (11-5, 4-4) by a 3-1 score (25-17, 20-25, 27-29, 22-25).

Four Presidents tallied all the kills for W&J with 13 each including Faith Fetsko (Venetia, Pa./South Park), Abby Oldham (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), Cali Dagen (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Lola Jacobs (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette). Oldham's 13 kills marked a career high for the middle blocker.

Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) led the setting duties with 47 assists on the night. Five Presidents tallied double figure digs led by Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) with 19. Dagen and Oldham each had two total blocks each.

W&J opened the first set with momentum as they grew an early 9-3 lead. Service aces from Sydney Allen (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Jordan Sirianni (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) in the early portion helped the Presidents grow the healthy advantage. Jacobs sparked the finishing point run for the Presidents and ended the first set victory out with a service ace.

The Presidents went down 11-4 early in the second set and ultimately could not over come the early deficit. Oldham and Dagen logged kills down the stretch but to no avail.

Trading leads in the crucial third set, the Wolverines built a 19-16 lead. A service error by Grove City helped the Presidents knot the contest at 19. As Grove City held a 24-23 edge, a kill by Dagen and service ace by Jacobs put the Presidents in the drivers seat with a one-point lead, 25-24. Both units traded points again until Grove City rattled off three consecutive points to close out the set, 29-27.

The Presidents fought in the fourth and final set but ultimately succumbed to the Wolverines' momentum as they faltered, 25-22.

W&J will look to regroup next Wednesday (Oct. 15) as they host the Saint Vincent Bearcats for the second meeting of the season between both squads. First serve is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
