Romano Scores First Collegiate Goal as W&J Secures Conference Win over Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A pair of third quarter goals guided the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team (5-7, 3-3 NCAC) to a 2-0 shutout victory over host Transylvania University (0-10, 0-6 NCAC) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium.

Following a slow start to the game, W&J gained some traction offensively in the second quarter. The Presidents recorded four shots and three penalty corners during the frame. W&J's best chance at scoring came when Joscelynn Anglin (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) send a shot on cage that was saved defensively by Transylvania. Just before halftime, Jessica Nakanishi (Susanville, Calif./Lassen) put another shot on goal before W&J. Those saves by the Pioneers allowed the game to go into halftime scoreless.

W&J broke through in the third quarter with a pair of scores. Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) scored an unassisted goal to put W&J up 1-0 late in the quarter. Less than two minutes later, Giering set up a second score to pad the W&J lead. Giering set up Capriana Romano (Peters Township, Pa./Peters Township), who rattled the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal to extend the Presidents' advantage to 2-0.

The Presidents held the Pioneers scoreless over the final 15 minutes to secure the third shutout of the season.

Giering paced the offensive efforts with a goal and an assist. Giering posted a team-high four shots in the victory. Dating back to W&J's win over Oberlin, Giering has played a hand in five consecutive goals for the Presidents, with two goals and three assists during that time.

Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) started and made two saves during the first half of the game. Kaitlyn Wildermuth (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) made two saves in the final 15 minutes of action.

W&J continues its weekend conference road trip on Sunday (Oct. 19) when they face Wittenberg University. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Springfield, Ohio.
