ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team made the trek across state to close out its 2025 season Wednesday afternoon. The Presidents (5-11) were unable to overcome a halftime deficit and fell by a 2-1 score to Cedar Crest (3-13) in non-conference action at the FalconPlex in Allentown, Pa.
Wednesday's game marked the eighth time in 16 games this season that W&J played in a game decided by a single score. 
Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) registered her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the loss. The goal assured Giering will finish her career in among the program's top 10 leaders in goals and assists.  
Following a scoreless first quarter, Cedar Crest scored off a rebound in the early stages of the second to take a 1-0 lead. The Falcons carried the one-goal advantage into halftime. Both teams recorded seven shots in the first half.
Playing with a player up after a green card was issued, the Falcons added to their lead in the third. Olivia Wanner scored both goals for Cedar Crest.  
Giering cut the Falcons' lead in half when she scored just 2:25 into the fourth quarter. 
Emily Bloom (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) recorded an assist on Giering's goal. The Presidents continued to push for the equalizer, as they registered three penalty corner chances in the fourth. However, the Presidents came up short in their attempts to force overtime.
W&J held advantages in shots (16-9), shots on goal (8-6) and penalty corners (9-4). Giering paced the Presidents with five shots, three of which were on goal.
Kaitlyn Wildermuth (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) started in goal and made four saves in 60 minutes.
Giering finishes her W&J career with 25 goals, 18 assists and 68 points. Her goal on Wednesday puts her tied for 10th most goals all time. Giering also finished 10th in assists and 11th in points in program history.
Wednesday's game marks the end of the collegiate careers for W&J's seven field hockey seniors. Giering,

Riley Dortenzo (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg),

Sara Schriver (Pickens, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) will be lost to graduation.
