HIRAM, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College football team (2-2, 2-0) handled the Hiram Terriers (2-3, 1-2) in a 70-13 verdict in their ninth all-time meeting.
The ground game powered the Presidents offense as three backs scored two or more touchdowns on the afternoon.
Kobe Derosa (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) led the way with three rushing touchdowns on nine rushes for 61 yards.
Andrew Sharp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
Cam Mulvaney (Hopkinton, Mass./Bridgton Academy (Maine)) each scored two rushing touchdowns as well.
Kellan Stahl (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) passed for 259 yards for two touchdowns, going 16-for-27 on the day.
John Peduzzi (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian Academy) and Derosa each hauled in a receiving touchdown.
The W&J defense shined for a second consecutive week as they created 15 tackles for loss, five sacks and five interceptions.
Owen Sinclair (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) led the team in sacks with 1.5 while
Alex Boyce (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) led the team in tackles for loss with 2.0.
Dante DeRubbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) collected two interceptions for the second-straight week to the lead the team.
On the opening drive of the regulation for the Terriers, the Presidents' defensive lineman
Owen Sinclair (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) blocked a punt which was recovered by Peduzzi for the first score of the game. Hiram responded with a score of their own later in the quarter but were answered by two touchdowns by Derosa and
Andrew Sharp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) to take a 21-7 lead.
The Presidents outscored the Terriers 28-0 in the second quarter to grow a sizable 49-7 lead going into the half. Two interceptions and 288 yards of offense in the quarter propelled W&J to the measurable lead.
W&J stacked more scores in the second half, outscoring Hiram by a 21-6 margin to close out the victory. The win marks the second time in program history the Presidents have scored 70 points on the road. The last time the Presidents scored 70 points on the road was against West Virginia University, 72-0.
The W&J football team returns to the gridiron this coming Saturday (Oct. 11) for the college's homecoming weekend game against the Westminster Titans. Opening kickoff is set for a 2:05 start.
