WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team (2-0) coasted to an 82-42 victory over the Ohio Northern Polar Bears to kickoff the Annual Hampton Inn by Hilton Women's Basketball Tipoff.
Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and
Riley DeRubbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led the Presidents offensively with 21 and 18 points, respectively. DeRubbo also led the team in rebounding with eight boards.
Jaden Wan (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) and
Marina Grado (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) each scored 10 points as well.
Both units battled in the opening minutes of the first quarter, settling at a 9-9 score with over three minutes to play. W&J broke out in an 8-2 run to close out the opening quarter, sparked by back-to-back layups from
Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa./Indiana Area). Two free throws from
Raegan Kadlecik (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) and a driving layup made by freshman
Michelle Jellison (Monongahela, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) gave W&J at 17-11 lead.
W&J took control of the home opener in the second quarter, outscoring the Polar Bears 21-9. The Presidents opened the quarter with a 10-2 run capped by a DeRubbo and-one to push the advantage to 27-13. Grado made a driving layup with seconds remaining in the half to grant the Red & Black a 38-20 lead going into the break.
The Presidents kept their foot on the gas out of the half, reaching a 20-point advantage over Ohio Northern. Loutsion scored 10 of the Presidents' 18 points in the third frame.
With a 56-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter of action, the Presidents coasted to a 40-point victory. W&J's bench shot 6-of-8 from beyond the arc in the final quarter.
The Presidents held large advantages in fast break points (24-5), points off of turnovers (22-4) and points in the paint (38-24). W&J also edged Ohio Northern in the rebounding battle, 33-30.
Women's Basketball returns to action at the Hampton Inn by Hilton Women's Basketball Tipoff with a matchup with the Mount Union Purple Raiders. The final game of the annual tournament is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
