Presidents Overpower Barons for Conference Road Win

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team (7-1, 2-0 PAC) put together an efficient shooting effort to roll to an 83-47 road victory over Franciscan University of Steubenville (3-8, 0-2 PAC) Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Finnegan Fieldhouse.

Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa./Indiana Area) and Riley DeRubbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) spearheaded the Presidents' effort in the victory. Kovalchick and DeRubbo matched the game highs in points and rebounds. Both players registered 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Presidents. Jaden Wan (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) made it a trio of Presidents in double figures with 13 points.

The Presidents connected on 50.8 percent from the field. W&J made 32-of-63 attempts over the 40 minutes. The Presidents made six three pointers while draining 13-of-17 attempts at the free throw line. W&J forced the Barons into 25 turnovers and limited Franciscan to 5-of-25 from behind the three-point line.

After a slow start offensively over the initial five minutes of the game, W&J closed the opening quarter with a 9-4 run to extend its lead to 16-7. Kovalchick and DeRubbo highlighted the run by accounting for seven-straight points.

Wan accounted for six early second quarter points as the W&J lead stretched into double digits at 25-13. A jumper by DeRubbo gave the Presidents their largest lead of the first half, a 32-15 lead at the 2:09 mark. The Presidents held a 38-24 lead at halftime.

W&J further extended its advantage over the third and fourth quarters in the lopsided victory. Back-to-back lay ins by Kovalchick extended the lead to 48-28 at the 6:04 mark of the third. The Presidents continued to have a stranglehold on the lead, as a three by Wan and free throws by Raegan Kadlecik (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) swelled the Presidents' advantage to 60-38 after three quarters of play.

The Presidents ripped off 15-straight points to open the fourth. DeRubbo, Kovalchick and Marina Grado (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) all drained three-pointers during the run. Brianna Toal (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area), Olivia Kemp (Canonsburg, Pa./Fort Cherry) and Emily Mountain (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewport) all found the scoring sheet off the bench during the fourth quarter.

Following a break for final examinations, the Presidents will return to action on December 17 versus Carnegie Mellon in its School Day Game. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start in Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
