WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team prevailed in a down-to-the-wire 78-76 win over Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
The victory improves the Presidents to 18-6 overall with a 14-5 mark in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. The win helps W&J double its win total from a season ago. Waynesburg drops to 7-16 overall and 5-13 in the PAC.
Four Presidents scored double figures in the outing.
Matt Seidl (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) W&J needed as he led the offensive with 23 points while adding five rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Cameron Rowell (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and
Quinton Burlenski (Bridgeport, Ohio/Central Catholic) put up 16 points each followed by
Nathan Plotner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) with 11 points.
After falling behind in the first half, 45-36, the Presidents kicked into gear, slowly chipping away until they found their first lead at the 11:35 mark, 54-53. After exchanging the lead a few more times, Waynesburg pulled ahead and extended the lead to 12 points with just 3:33 to play.
The Presidents responded with a 15-0 run to regain the lead with nine seconds remaining. Rowell and Seidl combined for all 15 points during the game-changing run. A three pointer from Seidl tied the game, 75-75, with 38 seconds left. After forcing a steal and taking a timeout, Burlenski buried a triple to give W&J a 78-75 lead.
A Yellow Jacket was fouled on an attempted tying three pointer with a second left on the clock but missed the second foul shot. This forced him to miss the third in hopes of putting in another bucket, but the ball missed the rim entirely, which gave W&J possession. A long inbounds pass allowed W&J to secure the victory.
W&J overcame a 52-34 advantage in points in the paint for Waynesburg.
The Presidents travel to Thiel for a conference game on Wednesday (Feb. 19). Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
