WOOSTER, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-8 decision to the College of Wooster in its season opener Wednesday evening in Ohio.
Brynne Stewart (Painesville, Ohio / Andrews Osborne Academy) paced the Presidents' offensive efforts in the 2025 opener. Stewart recorded two goals and added two assists for a team-high four points.
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) fired in a team-high three goals for her 12th career hat trick. Bogats also chipped in four ground balls and four draw controls.
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led the Presidents in ground balls (5) and matched for the team lead in caused turnovers (3). Defensively,
Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Megan Brackney (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) made her first start in goal. Brackney finished with eight saves in 60 minutes of work.
The Presidents put up the first goal of the contest for what would be their lone lead of the night. Bolinda accounted for the game's first goal off an assist from Stewart. That lead was short lived as the Fighting Scots responded with four-straight scores to take a 4-1 lead midway through the opening quarter of play. Bogats stopped the Scots' scoring streak with an unassisted goal with four seconds left in the first.
After W&J opened the second quarter with a score to trim the deficit to a single goal, Wooster ripped off five-straight goals to swell the lead to 9-3 at the 7:28 mark. Bogats scored unassisted with 1:03 remaining before halftime. However, the Fighting Scots won the ensuing draw control and answered to lead by a 10-4 margin at halftime.
W&J was able to find its footing in the third quarter. The Presidents outscored the Scots by a 4-2 margin during the frame. Stewart accounted for the first two W&J scores of the quarter. Bogats and
Shelby Blanford (Odenton, Md./Arundel) later tacked on a goal each to cut the Wooster lead to 12-8 as the game entered the fourth quarter.
The Presidents' efforts stalled in the fourth as Wooster registered all four goals in the final 15 minutes.
Wooster out-shot W&J by a 30-18 margin. The Fighting Scots held more narrow advantages in ground balls (29-25) and successful clears (13-12). Wooster nearly doubled up W&J in draw controls (16-9).
W&J returns to action with its home opener versus Wilson College on Tuesday (March 4). Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium.
