TRAFFORD, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team was awarded two Presidents' Athletic Conference players of the week for their performances on spring break.
Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) was tabbed with PAC Hitter of the Week while
Ethan Marszalek (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) earned PAC Pitcher of the week, announced by the conference Monday (March 17).
LaDuca dominated offensively for W&J on their Florida trip, helping the Presidents close with a 4-1 record last week. The senior captain posted a .523 batting average (11-for-21), tallied 11 hits, hit five doubles, batted in four runs, stole three bags and smashed one home run on the week. In a doubleheader with Marymount (Receiving Votes), LaDuca scored twice and stole a base in game one and then had a double and two RBIs in game two, as W&J completed the sweep. Against UMass Dartmouth, LaDuca started a 4-for-4 game with a first-pitch home run in the top of the first and added two doubles, a walk and four runs scored with one RBI. After adding a base hit against No. 17-ranked Rowan, LaDuca capped the trip with a 2-for-3 outing against Saint Joseph (Conn.), smacking his first triple of the season for one RBI with two walks and two stolen bases.
Marszalek had a stellar outing as W&J closed their spring break trip with a 5-1 victory over Saint Joseph (Conn.). He pitched 7.0 frames and fanned a season-high nine batters while allowing one run on six hits. In his final inning of work, the Blue Jays managed a leadoff triple, but Marszalek stranded the runner with a K and two groundouts to preserve a two-run lead. The nine strikeouts also match his career-high, set originally last May in an NCAA Regional win over Cortland.
The Presidents return to action in Pennsylvania after a restful weekend in a nonleague game against Division II Point Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
