Baseball Downed by Division II Point Park

WASHINGTON, Pa, - The Washington & Jefferson College Baseball team was bested in a nonleague matchup against NCAA Division II Point Park, 21-3.

W&J falls to 7-4 on the season while Point Park elevates to a 13-5 overall slate.

The Presidents saw seven batters bat the ball in play, led by Jack Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Knox Meier (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep). Drew Garth (Glenshaw, Pa./North Hills), Eli Owens (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac), Josh Dezenzo (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington), Luke Alvarez (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) and Tommy Dietrich (Davidsonville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) also logged base hits on the evening.

W&J jumped out a to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a clean inning from Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel). A first at-bat walk from Presidents' Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius), put the speedy shortstop at first to leadoff the inning. Soon after, LaDuca stole second to put the Presidents in scoring position. A groundout from Zac Stern (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) pushed LaDuca to third with two outs. As the Pioneers' lefty hurler came set, Skipper Jeff Mountain gave the all clear to take a shot at stealing home which successfully caught Point Park off guard, 1-0.

Giving up four in the top of the second, the Presidents mustered another run in the bottom of the frame. A double by the freshman designated hitter, Anderson, scored Dezenzo from second to cut the Pioneer lead to 4-2.

From this point on, Point Park managed to score 17 runs across the remaining seven innings. A single by Dietrich in the bottom of the ninth scored Rhys Arnold (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) from third to cap the scoring for W&J and conclude the 21-3 loss.

The scheduled bullpen game saw nine total W&J pitchers with Jackson Fox (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) picking up the loss in his first varsity outing. Rafe McClure (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), CJ Leuch (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and DiMatteo all logged scoreless innings with McClure and DiMatteo not giving up a hit.
